Sandton Central Urban Planning Process

The SCMD Process

The importance and impact of the Gautrain station and associated multi modal transport interchange on the Sandton Central node as a whole, as well as the impact of changes in commuter access and growth patterns over time, required that an urban development framework be formulated and be completed soon after the station precinct planning and modelling is outlined.

Gautrain - At home in Sandton

A factor driving the trend of luxury residential developments is the Gautrain, which will change the face of Sandton.

The project will have a positive effect on central Sandton's surrounding nodes as it creates access for commuters to and from other parts of the city, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport.

Billions of rands are earmarked for new office, retail and hotel developments near the Gautrain stations in Sandton Central, and this, in turn, is having huge spin-offs for both the existing property market and new residential developments.

"The switch-on of the Why Men is one of the most anticipated events in the district. The life-size figures, designed and made by Usha, are sculpted as metal armatures or frames which are then wrapped with LED rope light. We work closely with AAW Art Project Management, the specialist company who manages our Arts Programme, as well as Usha to change the designs annually and ensure that the Why Men are topical and always a new experience. Some of our classics though are brought back every year, including the Passionata figures - two kissing sculptures – as well as the all-time favourite and cheeky Why Man taking a leak on the sidewalk. This year the major theme is undoubtedly soccer, so most of the designs have something to do with our nation's passion for this beautiful game. You've got to see the injured Why Men placed outside Netcare to realise how far we can take the subject and make it fun," says Cara Reilly, marketing manager of the SCMD.

The Illumination Project is an inspiring and colourful addition to the Sandton Central Art's Programme, using art and an unusual design ethic to make the area a special place over the festive season. The project began in 2006 with 500 trees being wrapped with 5km's of rope light. In 2007, the SCMD used the same rope lights and commissioned artist Usha Seejarim to design the Why Men – wire figures wrapped in the rope light and placed throughout Maude Street.
