Eskom Cabling Project - Impact on Sandton Central
Please take note of the effect that the construction of Eskom's cable circuit project will have on the traffic in the Sandton Central area.
Demand for electrical power has been steadily increasing in the Sandton CBD and surrounding suburbs,
requiring the local electrical network to be strengthened in order to ensure a stable, reliable electrical
power supply for these areas into the future.
In this regard, Eskom started construction on the 15th February 2011 with the planned Craighall –
Sandpark 88kV cable circuit. The last section of the cable circuit will be routed via Grayston Drive and 5th
Street into the Sandpark Substation, on the corner of 5th Street and Fredman Drive. The project manager of
this project is NETGroup.
This serves to inform the general public, property owners and stakeholders of Sandton Central regarding the
effect this project will have on the traffic in the area:
Traffic Deviations
Due to many existing underground services in this area, the only route available is underneath south to
north bound lanes of 5th Street. Unfortunately this will result in the temporary closure of these two lanes of
5th Street as well as the slipway from Grayston Drive into Sandton Drive.
Therefore the north to south bound lanes of 5th Street will be converted into a single lane dual carriage way.
Access to the surrounding properties along Park Lane and Norwhich Close will still be possible in both
ways, although the volume of traffic via 5th Street will be affected. It is advised to seek alternative routes, i.e.
via Alice Lane and Sandton Drive and avoid 5th Street during peak times.
Time Period
The anticipated construction start date is the 1st of November 2011. The abovementioned traffic restrictions
will therefore come into affect by the 31st of October 2011.
It is anticipated that duration of the project will be 4 weeks, resulting in the completion date of 30 November
2011, if not delayed by rain or other unforeseen circumstances.
