Safe Streets
Sandton Central has a total team of 72 Public Safety Ambassadors (PSAs) who patrol public spaces on foot, and seven armed response vehicles. A night shift team patrols the streets to ensure that visitors and residents are safe while officers are clearly noticeable to deter any prospective criminal activity.
The presence of the PSAs has had a noticeable effect on safety and security in the area. With bright red uniforms, they rarely go unnoticed and play a significant role in deterring possible criminal activity. In fact, they have become much loved public figures, with residents referring to them as The Men in Red. The PSAs have direct contact to the main control room, and have proven to be highly effective when calling for rapid response teams to assist in diffusing potentially dangerous situations.
The PSA's are not just security guards, but have been trained in customer service and thus are the district's ambassadors too. As a motivational tool, the SCMD has an incentive programme called "PSA of the month" to give recognition for excellent work performance and going beyond normal duties to assist a resident or visitor. A ceremony is held at the parade and the PSA is awarded with a certificate and gift voucher.
In addition to the PSAs, the district also boasts 10 CCTV cameras, an invaluable tool in monitoring the streets of Sandton Central and preventing crime in the district. Five cameras were installed in 2007, and another five rolled out in 2008. Linked to the PSA ground response unit and CCTV off-site monitoring division, the images are monitored from a control room. As soon as an incident occurs, the response units are immediately alerted and dispatched to the scene.
